One IJT student killed, another injured at Saifee College

KARACHI: An activist from the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) died while another sustained injuries on Monday in a firing incident at Saifee College located in North Nazimabad.

    **

According to sources, some unidentified men, aged between 40-45 years came inside the college and opened fire. IJT students chased them but they managed to flee the scene.

    **

In the process, a bullet hit one of the IJT students, Atif, near his ribcage.

After sometime, when police came to the college, angered IJT students hurled stones at the police mobile, protesting against the firing incident.

In retaliation, policemen opened fire at them in which IJT’s Muhammad Arif died on the spot.

Sources in IJT allege that the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO) might be behind the incident as a few days back the IJT had requested college administration to take off APMSO’s flags from the college entrance.

However, the APMSO only operates in the college during the evening shift, which is why it could not be ascertained who was responsible for the incident.

The body of the deceased was moved to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy, while Atif is currently undergoing an operation in the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors say his condition is critical.

KU buses attacked by miscreants on MQM's Black Day

    Published: March 17, 2012

University administration announced to continue academic activities despite strike, 3 students injured in bus attack.

KARACHI: At least two point buses of Karachi University (KU) were attacked by miscreants on Saturday morning as they plied across the city to pick up students and employees for the university.

As many as two on-board students sustained injuries while the glass-windows of the buses were also smashed in, said a university official.

Karachi University had announced on Friday that the university would remain open on Saturday and all academic activities will continue despite Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) call to observe a Black Day and the business community’s strike in the metropolis.

The university’s transport committee chairman Zulqarnain Shadab told The Express Tribune that the ‘mishaps’ were reported in Gulberg and Safoora Chowrangi areas of the city.

“Our bus drivers are experienced, so they managed to drive past the miscreants without bearing much loss,” he said adding that the offenders pelted stones at the buses.

A number of university employees and students told The Express Tribune that several other buses were also stopped by unidentified men in different areas of the city including Dawood Chowrangi, Orangi 2 ½ and Shah Faisal Colony areas.

The miscreants, who were in groups, asked the drivers to return back to the university, cancelling their trips.

According to Shadab, the attendance in the university was very thin on Saturday as many point buses arrived back almost empty.

“A large number of students choose to commute through public transport which is off the road due to the strike,” he said, adding that the university will decide whether to dispatch the point buses or not in the afternoon after analysing the law and order situation of the city.

Strike call: Two KU buses come under attack

    Published: March 18, 2012

The attacks were reported from Gulberg and Safoora Chowrangi.

At least two point buses of the Karachi University (KU) were attacked on Saturday morning as they went across the city to pick up students and employees. A university official said that windows were smashed and at least two students were injured. KU had announced on Friday that it would remain open on Saturday and that classes would go ahead, even though a province-wide strike against extortion was called.

KU’s transport committee chairman, Zulqarnain Shadab, told The Express Tribune that the attacks were reported from Gulberg and Safoora Chowrangi. “Our bus drivers are experienced so they managed to drive past the men without bearing significant losses.” He added that the men pelted the buses with stones, which could have gone through the windows and hit students.

Numerous university employees and students told The Express Tribune that other buses were also stopped in different parts of the city, including Dawood Chowrangi, Orangi and Shah Faisal colony. These men told drivers to return to the university.

Shadab said that attendance at the university was thin, as many point buses came back empty. “A large number of students also choose to use public transport, but it wasn’t available because of the strike.”

Gunshots were also heard in many areas that further convinced people to stay indoors. Early morning firing in Liaquatabad, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Malir, Landhi, Lines Area, North Karachi, New Karachi, Soldier Bazaar and a few other localities sowed fear in the densely populated neighbourhoods.

Two vehicles were burnt in arson attacks near Liaquatabad. An official at the central fire station said a minibus and a van were set on fire on the main Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi Road near the Gharibabad underpass.

“Two fire tenders were sent to the spot,” he said. “By the time we reached there, the blaze had destroyed the minibus while the van was saved from complete destruction. It took us half an hour to complete the job.”

The area police, however, were unaware of the details of the incident, saying only the drivers of the two vehicles witnessed random firing by some youngsters before they intercepted their bus and van and set them on fire.

  • As per news story IJT guy died of police firing. Since when Sindh police become APMSO?

  • Numerous university employees and students told The Express Tribune that other buses were also stopped in different parts of the city, including Dawood Chowrangi, Orangi and Shah Faisal colony. These men told drivers to return to the university.

    Excerpt from the 4th post

Dawood Chowrangi is part of Landhi but does not have muhajir inhibitants. As for Shah Faisal and Orangi, it depends which area are under discussion so slapping it at MQM is unwise.

However, the APMSO only operates in the college during the evening shift, which is why it could not be ascertained who was responsible for the incident.

  • Safi poly and GCT ( SITE ) are under occupation by APMSO and IJT respectively for almost 20 yrs..... some serious work need to be done in colleges and universities around Pakistan to avoid such situation.

You are asking a hardcore IJT, Ex Saathi. Lagta hai Altaf kay bdlay main isko KU say bahar bhenka gaya tha:)

  • Jamiat introduced terrorism in students' politics and then other competitors followed the same course.

  • Problem is not with APMSO or IJT; but with our student politics... we need elections in colleges to "turn off" dictatorship mind of some students organizations.

Also, Need to make sure only students are participating in student politics not some politicians.

:( But now he is just an internet freak, clicking and scrolling viciously and barbarically on different webpages with the word "MQM" written somewhere on it.

  • The intervention of main stream political parties is too heavy in students' politics. Their intervention in students' politics is the main cause of terrorism and crimes in the educational institutions. The political parties are responsible for terrorism and crimes in educational institutions.

  • MQM has killed so many innocent students but the parties of these students do not bother to make cases against MQM in Police stations or courts but infact do the reverse, that is the reason an innocent student has died by a police bullet due to provocative attitude of these rubbish political wings of parties. When workers of these parties can not catch criminals why they are dragging children of others in such political activities.
