What was Quaid's ideology at Partition?

  • was it secularism? then his speeches suggest it was not. he wanted a theocratic state which was governed by religious values. why the confusion then?

  • Dear Leen

    What is secularism?

Don't give the defination I hear everday.Give me your defination.

  • Minimum involvement of religion. As i view it

  • Jinnah sahib was fighting for the rights of a muslim minority within India. He (and the AIML) till the last minute was willing to accept a political entity which safe guarded muslim socio-economic /religious-cultural rights within a greater India. (see 1946 Cabinet Mission Plan)

That is vastly different from a theocratic state. Anyone who argues otherwise is being delusional and unfair to history.

  • was it secularism? then his speeches suggest it was not. he wanted a theocratic state which was governed by religious values. why the confusion then?

Quid was against theorcatie state run by clergy. He wanted Pakistan to be democratic.. Now by democracy he meant, A state by the people, for the people -- If people want islam in Pakistan the it is upto people... If they don't want then it is upto them..

  • Please see Jinnah sahib's Broadcast talk to the people of Australia recorded on 19th February, 1948 here:

    http://jinnah.pk/2009/09/27/pakistan-and-her-people-i/

Please read the 6th para from the top

"The great majority of us are Muslims. We follow the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (may peace be upon him). We are members of the brotherhood of Islam in which all are equal in rights, dignity and self-respect. Consequently, we have a special and a very deep sense of unity. But make no mistake: Pakistan is not a theocracy or anything like it."

  • Quaid could not have asked for the theocratic state as there were no intentions of Pakistan being a theocracy.

He was looking for something of a piece of land where Muslims could live by their own laws ( whatever they maybe). Quaid himself being attributed to being a Shia , Khoja or even being a non Muslim was not looking for a Islam Theocratic State.

If anyone falls under that impression they are highly mistaken.

  • انگریز کے پٹھو کی کوئی آئیڈیالوجی نہیں تھی

  • We follow the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (may peace be upon him).

    Was Qauid smoking.. Contradiction

Pakistan is not a theocracy or anything like it."

  • You will also have to understand people who belong to the different sects of Islam are usually the most fervent in desiring Brotherhood and equality and self respect from the main body of Islam. i.e Sunnis. Therefore you will find almost every sect claiming for peace love and brotherhood as they know it as a fact they are different from the main version of Islam.

Therefore you will find in Quaid's speeches a lot of rhetoric about Muslims being a part of a brotherhood and everybody is equal and yada yada yada.

  • so is it right to pose that Quaid wanted a secular state? where the interests are safeguarded of all the people whether Muslims or Hindus.

  • His speech of Constituent Assemble 11th August 1947, clearly indicates that his political stance was to safeguard Muslims. And the principle that guided him was Justice

  • Dear Leen

You are very much right. And don't forget that the role of the religious leaders of that time(or you can call people from the right camp) was also a major fector which enforce Quaid to avoid defining structure of new state on religious outlines.

His idea was a true seculer state.Where religion is not a public matter but a private.Where Laws are made for equal rights for all the citizens and where no law clashes either islamic virtues or compromise any other religious practices.

A state with absolute harmony among all the segments of society.

Malysia is quite an example to understand His model but its not 100% true copy of Quaid's sketch.
