Jinnah’s Direct Action Day

  • On August 16, 1946, Muslim League thugs ran riot in Calcutta, in response to Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s call for Direct Action. “We will have a divided India or a destroyed India.” Jinnah had thundered while threatening action on the streets.

By the time the vultures descended to feast on rotting carcasses, at least 4,000 lives had been laid to waste. LIFE recorded the horror and sorrow of the Great Calcutta Killing
