US soldiers suicide deaths exceed combat deaths in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that suicides in the U.S. military surged to a record 349 last year.

That far exceeds the 295 American combat deaths in Afghanistan in 2012 and compares with 301 military suicides in 2011.

Some private experts predict that the trend will worsen this year.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and others have called military suicides an epidemic.

The Army had the highest number of suicides among active-duty troops last year at 182, but the Marine Corps had the largest percentage increase — up 50 percent to 48.

The Air Force recorded 59 suicides and the Navy had 60.

  • AMERICAN WAR HERO AND DECORATED NAVY SEAL KILLED in his home town. THOSE WHO LIVE BY SWORD DIE BY SWORD. Chris Kyle as most effective American sniper claimed to have killed 255 Iraqis in his 2012 best selling book "American Sniper" although Pentagon said he killed 150. He never felt remorse for his kills.

    Is this not Divine retribution?

Former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, author of the best-selling autobiography "American Sniper," was one of two people killed Saturday at a gun range, authorities said.

The 38-year-old, who declared himself the "most lethal sniper in U.S. history," was killed along with 35-year-old Chad Littlefield on Saturday afternoon in Glen Rose, Texas, southwest of Fort Worth, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Police arrested suspect Eddie Ray Routh, 25, after a brief pursuit. He is facing two counts of capital murder, the department said.

Kyle, an outspoken advocate for war veterans, claimed more than 150 sniper killings in Iraq, which he described as a record for any American. He said insurgents placed a bounty on his head and nicknamed him "the devil."

Also is this not Divine retribution too?

  • American train their soldiers to shoot innocent people and in the end regret shoots them. These soldiers don't use their mind and gave their lives for politics and for the politicians. The soldiers die and politicians enjoy

    Dar sahib

Perhaps it is a true statement but then is this phenomenon applicable only to USA. I think all armies are trained to kill.

By the way when the suicide bombers are trained to kill, they are also trained to kill anyone and the poor bombers dont have any means to distinguish between innocent and culprits. These suicide bombers, though get a chance to live enough to see the "regret" day.

All killings are killings and shall be condemned equally.

  • Americans are comfortable after killing Osama Bin Laden. After Obama TV speech on killing of Osama every American street was filled with people chanting slogan "USA! USA". Obama won the second terms on this sole reality that he gave back the sense of confidence that they are the greatest and safest. After Osama, there is no charismatic character either in Al-qaeda or Talibans that can plan and inflict any international terrorism. Talibans and Al-qaeda groups in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia are local Bhatta khor groups and killing local people on the question of sectarian faiths. How beautifully, the international terrorism has been turned into local professional terrorists that kill their own people. And American themsleves close their eyes or turn their heads the otherway when arms and ammunition are purchased, no matter through underworld, the money is coming in USA.

  • Hypocrite Bhai

I think all armies are trained to kill.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Your above statement correct as long as they aren't misguided and brainwashed. Media is tool to brainwash people. Take example of glacier, an event which killed Pakistani soldiers in last years.. In Pak army, not many soldier wish to go such places like glaciers.. and when they died, corrupt army generals and media started glorifying and brainwashing common folks about truth.. This is case of America too. Majority of marines have been brainwashed.. They never know truth what they are fighting for.

“In all ages the people have honored those who dishonored them. They have worshiped their destroyers; they have canonized the most gigantic liars, and buried the great thieves in marble and gold. Under the loftiest monuments sleeps the dust of murder.”
