ISLAMABAD: Unidentified men kidnapped Afghanistan’s former governor of Herat province in Islamabad on Friday, police and embassy sources said.

Sayed Fazalullah Wahidi had arrived in Islamabad along with his family to get visas to travel to UK, diplomatic sources told The Express Tribune.

The former envoy had gone to a restaurant with his 12-year-old grandson when unidentified persons arrived in two vehicles and kidnapped him, leaving the child, sources said.

According to a police official, the former governor was staying at a guesthouse in Islamabad’s F-7 sector and was near Rana Market when he was abducted.

Following his disappearance, “the embassy has registered a case with the police,” a diplomatic source said.

Several embassy officials also visited Kohsar Police Station to register a first information report (FIR) of the former governor’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, Afghan ambassador in Islamabad Dr Omar Zakhilwal said he is seriously concerned over the unfortunate incident and is in touch with Pakistani authorities, an embassy source added.

Fazalullah Wahidi was considered an influential governor as he remained very close to former president Hamid Karzai and also served as governor of Kunar province.
