Secularism and Secularisation
A good article by Humeira Iqtidar exposing all the sellouts who are trying to sell their "choran" of secularism to the Pakistani nation.
Much has been written about secularism and
secularisation, yet the precise modalities of their
relationship have received little attention. The vague
but generally accepted assumption seems to be that
secularisation in Europe led to secularism, and
secularism in non-western societies will lead to
secularisation. Often the two terms are used
synonymously. It seems particularly imperative, both for
academic and political reasons, to think through the
implications of these two terms and their relation. Does
secularism inevitably lead to secularisation? Can
secularisation happen without secularism? How precisely are secularism as state policy and secularisation as a societal process, related?
For the last two decades but particularly since the war of
terror began, the conflation of Islamism with terrorism,
and secularism with democracy, has precluded any clear-
headed discussion about secularism, democracy and Islamism
in Pakistan. Prominent liberal activists such as Pervez Hoodbhoy and Ayesha Siddiqa, who in other contexts have done valuable work, have remained mired in an earlier history, refusing to acknowledge the differences within the range of Muslim fundamentalists and changes within Islamism, as well as in its context. All Islamists are not militants
and all militants are not Islamists. Policy and political
responses need to be calibrated to the actual problems
posed by the different kinds of groups.
Damagingly, these liberal activists have supported a military dictatorship that proclaimed “Enlightened
Moderation” as its raison d’etre, just as an earlier one claimed Islamisation as its own, and they have championed
sustained bombing and drone attacks in one of the poorest
regions of Pakistan purportedly to save democracy and secularism from the generic genie of Islamism. There have been few moves by these liberals to understand the range
of motives and strategies employed by the different
groups or the differences between militants and others.

RE: Role of Islam in Political Life: What Pakistanis Think?
Islam is a part and parcel of the Pakistani society. No one can disassociate it from the overall social fabric of Pakistan. A tiny but vocal minority of sell outs and paid agents cannot force the 180 million to go other way.
RE: Shaheed Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti & Haq Nawaz Gandapur , Barsi on 26th August
The killing of Akbar Bugti Shaheed was a watershed in the history of Pakistan. I still remember how the "chamchas" of Musharraf dictator were hailing it as a victory for Pakistan by terming him "ghaddar" on that fateful day on these very forums.
Ironically these double-faced "chamchas" of Musharraf are still amongst us but with a different cloak over them these days. There is a term for these "chamchas" in urdu:
چڑھتے سورج کے پجاری۔۔۔
RE: موروثی سیاست
So far no one has able to answer this for me in this thread:
Is dynastic politics more harmful and dangerous for the country than the politics of ethnicity, race and language that divides the nation further?
I am also not in favor of the dynastic politics at all but how could it be justified to put the entire blame on a lessor evil and completely ignoring the bigger evil that you indulge in ever day.
RE: موروثی سیاست
Don;t derail the topic, stay the course. Here things are highlighted of your 'graaeen' who have no value for merit, due to their incompetency, they always resort to nepotism and made every effort possible to loot this country and uproot it.
Derail the topic? Was it me who brought "stealing-our-resources" non-sense in this discussion?
BTW you haven't told us yet what are your resources and who is stealing it. We all would love to know more about your resources.
As for my "graeens" I have almost 180 million of them. Some of them are good but some are bad like you. But unlike you I dont discriminate them on the basis of their cast, creed, color of their skin or the language they speak. I would not mind if any of my "graeen" from Karachi comes to my place for work and living.
RE: Dynastic politics: MQM style
First read this statement
for them supporting Altaf Hussain financially is not a big deal and not seen as problem.
and then this one...
giving charity on the name of your child is not an unheard concept
How can a person who lives on a charity of his own workers as per quaidkamazaar's own words above can give charity to others and that too using his daughter name?
BTW, What is Altaf bhai's source of income apart from the charity he receives from his followers?
RE: موروثی سیاست
pakistan's double standards for karachi in terms of resource distribution is well-documented.
Would you like to elaborate any of these double standards?
Also people come from all over country to get government employment where the people born and raised in Karachi are deprived of such
So your beef is that people from other parts of the country must not be allowed to come to Karachi for work and living?
But isn't it against the constitution that grants free access to every citizen of the country to work and live where ever he/she wishes to?
Is Karachi not part of Pakistan that Pakistanis need visa from MQM to visit, work and live there?
